Chenies Baptist Church – Secretary’s Report 2016

Membership: The number of members reduced by 2 following the departure of Meg and Jeremy Jordan, as they returned in the summer to their home country of America.  Total membership now stands at 39.

Baptisms: There were no Baptisms to report in 2016.

Services: We held our annual Memorial Service for Loved Ones in February, the Good Friday service with Tony Mason preaching (our sincere thanks to Tony for stepping in at late notice following the news of Jim Graham’s diagnosis), the Deacons led and organised our summer series ‘Mission – go out into all the world’ based upon Paul’s Missionary journey’s, focussing on B & LC West Africa and America, Nigel - Europe, Andy – UK & Spain, Penny & Chris – Kenya  and South Africa, Adrian & Bao Kie – China, Korea & India and ended the year with the traditional Christingle and Christmas Day services.  My sincere thanks to all those involved in these services.

Pulpit Secretary:  We have continued to be blessed by many visiting speakers sharing in God’s word. During the first quarter of 2016 our guests were invited to follow the theme of ‘stillness’ and during the second quarter looking at Jesus’ commands. Since October we have been mainly looking at the Gospel of Mark.  A ‘Sunday Special’ service on the second Sunday in the month was introduced as a more family, interactive service, starting earlier at 10.15am with a light breakfast, led by one of the Deacons, on similar lines to the summer series.

Playing Rota: My sincere thanks to Catherine Davey and Mai Stafford who continue to co-ordinate the playing rota and lead us so beautifully in worship.

The Manse:  The Manse has continued to be let out during the year; the first family moved in during November 2015 and left in May 2016 when they had secured a property to purchase locally.  This Christmas they returned with a large box of chocolates for the Church to enjoy! We welcomed a new family only 2 weeks after the initial tenants moved out, who stayed for 6 months whilst their own property was being refurbished. These 2 tenancies were secured and managed via John Roberts Letting Agents in Rickmansworth.  Since the Church’s agreement in November 2016, the Manse has now been let to a family within the Membership and is no longer managed via the letting agent.

NST Settlement Process: We continue to actively seek a new minister and trust in God’s timing. Acting as the liaison point between Chenies Baptist Church and the Central Baptist Association (Geoff Colmer - Regional Minister/Team Leader) prospective candidates are pursued to see if they are the right ‘fit’ and corresponded with accordingly. During 2016 a total of 7 potential ministers were interviewed, either face-to-face or an initial “screening” call by telephone, with one potential minister preaching with a peep on two occasions.

Families’ Worker Role: The job description for this role has been widely circulated to local churches, at LST, listed on-line at Premier job recruitment (a Christian charity), resulting in 2 interested parties who decided not pursue their applications.

It’s a been a real blessing and encouragement for me to be part of Chenies Baptist Church this past year and to have felt the love and support of those I’ve come into contact with on so many different levels.  Love and support can be expressed and seen in many ways, and it has been wonderful to witness God in action in those at CBC, for example, in giving time and service. Another expression of love and support is quite often seen how and where money is given and spent. Although we may not have a Minister or Families’ Worker yet, CBC’s continued willingness to invest in God’s kingdom through supporting a student at YWAM in Kenya, an LST Masters’ student, an LST Doctorate student and the educational sponsorship of a young girl in Kenya, continues to be heart-warming.

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheerfully. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (NLT)

So a big thank you to my fellow Deacons: Andy, Ben, Margaret, Nigel, Penny and recently co-opted Liz, our Moderator Todd Nightingale and everyone who has kept God’s Word alive and active at Chenies Baptist Church, without whom the above could not have been possible.

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Galatians 6:9 (NLT)
